German Federal Ministry of the Environment (BMUB)

The German German Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB) established the International Climate Initiative (IKI) in 2008. BMUB uses this instrument to enhance cooperation between the German Government and developing and emerging countries, with the order to reduce and adapt to climate change and preserve biodiversity. According to a resolution of the Parliament, the IKI receives EUR 120 million BMUB budget each year. The Climate and Energy Fund (EKF) also contributes money to the IKI and replenishes through the auction of allowances. This investment has enabled Germany to support other measures in the fields of climate change and biodiversity worldwide. Thus, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of BMUB provides a model for the “new and additional” funding requested by developing countries.
